Cycled to work today.
After some 'process optimisation' involving me actually checking the map to find the shortest functional route, I actually saved about 10 mins vs my virtual mind map. Some 'deviations' from the procedure resulted in 'loss time', so with further effort next time a good 15, or perhaps even 20 minutes can be cut next time...?
Well, I tried out Pioneer Road that runs parallel to Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim instead today. Well, there are no round abouts to negotiate, but instead I get 3 or 4 traffic light junctions with cars doing left turns. But the real bad part is the sheer narrowness of the road. There isn't even space for the double yellow line, and the vehicles remain the same: huge. And it's poorly lit and strewn with road debris. Cycling here really puts my tyres to the test, but so far 25mm at 100 psi is holding up pretty well.
Human beings love to compare, and I it seems like I am pretty human after all. 'The grass is greener on the other side' and 'crying over spilt milk' are silly phrases that apply too. On my 90min bike journey, at 60 mins I see Exxonmobil, at 75 mins I see GSK, and only at 90 mins I reach Merck. Exxon is the highest paying (50% more), followed by GSK and Merck. There are other nitty-gritty details of good traffic till exxon and the place being bike-friendly... And guess what? Exxon was my 1st choice, GSK my 2nd, and Merck my 3rd. Certainly would leave me feeling a little frustrated if I cycled to work to and fro everday wouldn't it? Like 10 reminders a week of how I was out-ranked by my batch mates and having to pay for it with more sweat, less sleep, and less money.
But anyway I'm getting fat eating unlimited peanut butter cookies in the office pantry everyday. And the free salad, soup, soft drinks and 3-in-1 milo help too.
Only thing left I need is a place to Zzzzzz.... Whoops.
